Navigation by digital RoadBook
Notes, tulips and waypoints on a tablet, with the app defined for the edition. The most demanding and most rewarding way to read the road north.
The essentials
-
01
A tablet and the app
A tablet compatible with the digital roadbook app defined by the organization, mounted on the bike. In 2026 the app was TerraPirata, with Sportity for communications.
-
02
A second GPS device
Mandatory: a GPS, tablet or smartphone with a navigation app, to complete the route with an emergency GPX track if the RoadBook device fails.
-
03
Unlocked Gate by Gate
The official RoadBook for the next leg is unlocked at each Gate, according to the schedule and instructions given at the briefing.
Reading the RoadBook
Each note gives you the distance, a tulip with the junction and the direction to take, and the information you need: hazards, tarmac or off-road, speed limits, villages. In a forest with ten tracks that look alike, the RoadBook is the only thing that tells you which one is yours.
The RoadBook route is more or less the same as the Rally GPX one, but with different control waypoints: the two classes cannot simply follow each other.
The Navigation Waypoints (WPN) support the RoadBook; their activation and validation radii vary by type and context and are explained during the briefings. Safety Waypoints (WPS) must be respected to the letter.
The navigation course in Paris
During the Paris days, our founder and six-time Dakar rider Tiziano Internò holds a complete navigation course: the details of the app, practical tips and tricks, and the answers to your questions about managing navigation on the road.
The course is highly recommended for every Rally RoadBook rider. Bring your navigation device with the apps already installed.
Contact the organization immediately: if needed, you receive by email a GPX track to use on your second device and reach the next Gate.
At the Gate you have two options: repair or replace the RoadBook device and continue in the same category, or continue in Rally GPX if that is not possible. Category switches requested from the administrative checks onward carry a €150 fee; the reverse switch, from GPX to RoadBook, is not allowed.
Install the apps at home, learn the gestures of the app with any sample roadbook, check the mount, the power supply and the brightness of the screen in full sun. In Paris, use the shakedown route to test the complete setup before the start.
Keep checking Sportity during the event: deviations are published with the RoadBook note numbers and the waypoints where you leave and rejoin the route.
